Stewart is a sweet and fairly spritely, senior aged boy whose family surrendered him to the pound in a terribly neglected state. His nails were so long and curled around he was unable to walk normally and his coat appeared to have been chewed off from the base of his shoulder blades down to his tail. Despite Stewart’s poor condition, he is a loving natured little dog who enjoys spending time with people.

As with most ageing dogs, Stewart has had some struggles with pain episodes. X-rays have shown no signs of injury or bone abnormality, therefore it is strongly suspected this intermittent pain is caused by muscle and soft tissue injury and largely exacerbated by age related stiffness and previous poor nutritional standard. The frequency of these pain episodes has diminished completely. In fact Stewart has taken to short games of chase and wrestling with two of his favourite canine foster friends and is showing no negative effects from his new found fun.

Stewart tolerates other dogs and even gets along really well with some. He can be quite selective about which dogs he befriends; therefore Stewart is ideally suited to being an only dog. Alternatively a small female canine companion to share his retirement years with may also be suitable, pending a meet with the resident dog. Stewart will not be homed to a family where there are children or where there are constant visitors.

It is important that Stewart, as an older dog, NOT be allowed to jump on or off furniture at all, that he has gentle short walks that he loves and has a stair free environment. It is very important his joints are not over taxed (remember those long toe nails which placed undue stress on joints, tendons and ligaments).

Maltese dogs require regular grooming, which can be a big stressor for Stewart as he had never been groomed in the 10 years prior to his surrender to the RSPCA. Brushing and combing, having his nails clipped and cleaning tear stains from under his eyes can be a challenge as Stewart can be quite stubborn and melodramatic. Quiet, gentle persistence will be needed by his new family to get Stewart used to these regular necessary tasks.

Although Stewart has some struggles, he just needs someone who is patient, committed, empathetic and confident with handling dogs. Stewart is an adorable and loveable little man who just needs to be loved and pampered and will give an abundance of love in return for many years to come.

If you would like to turn the life of this little man around he is waiting to meet you at Metford, NSW; Date of Birth: 01/01/2005
